Tons do it. I did many many years ago then boomeranged back as the platform is better for mid-market, although that’s geo and industry dependent.
Sorry this is long but wanted to give my thoughts:
Pros of switching:
- getting to a more prestigious IB brand. Honestly when you’re younger this matters but when you get older it really doesn’t. The platform is more important, hence why I jumped. The best deals I ever did and the most value to shareholders (not only $) was in B4.
- more comp, the comp only becomes truly comparable at MD+
- seeing bigger and flashier deals
- potentially better exit opps solely because of the brand
Cons:
- WLB, more comp = more hours. You’re likely doing 70-75 hours a week here and then more when it’s crunch time on a deal. In IB you’ll be doing 80-100, depending on the group.
- you’re unlikely to lateral as an Aso and depending how many YoE you have, you may even go to An1.
- this is a big one: your role on the deal team. On massive teams (mega deals) you’ll be one of a dozen on the team and only do a sliver. In b4 as an ASO you’ll be doing everything. So your breath and depth is way more.
- I didn’t appreciate this until I moved: in IB as an Aso you sit on the conference line (or Zoom) and take notes. Don’t speak. As an Aso in B4, you could be leading calls.
Like I said before, if you’re going to do it, do it now because it’ll reset your career and is easier to do than later in life.
I was referring to B4 CF/M&A not TS/FDD.
Requires the market to be good. When it is, pretty easy to go from Big 4 TAS to solid MM IB. 2023 for example it was extremely difficult though.
What do you consider HL and RBC? Top MM IB? Have interviews for lateral role (i'm in fdd)
