our job is essentially being a cement mixer. We’re there to make sure nothing hardens and gets stuck- whether that’s concepts, executions, agency culture, etc. etc. we’re there to keep pushing and making things (and people) better than they would be without us there. But yeah, some days you can feel pretty useless when you have 8 back-to-backs and have t had a creative thought all day.
Oh, I’m a giant prick.
It’s one reason why being a CD is not for everyone. This is why there are so many terrible CDs. It’s just as much a people managing role as it is creative. Unfortunately the entire system of promotions is broken in agencies. Really amazing designers and writers shouldn’t have to take promotions that take themselves out of the realm of design or writing to get better pay.
Creative Director 1 Idk who you are but I'll never forget this analogy! Thank you 🙏

Yeah, I mean, that’s not really all your job entails. You can push teams to think bigger, punch stuff up, fight for work or help bulletproof it, stand up for the team, empower the team, and be hands-on if you feel like the work needs it. Sure, you can reduce your role to that of a hands-off project manager, but the work won’t be very good.
Maybe somebody should start a CD school that agencies could send their best and brightest to, to get the most out of their senior level creatives.
