When you’re up until 2 AM regularly, this is the natural result.
Also NYC frequently needs to coordinate with west coast and all of those people are asleep.
A lot of people log in at 10 or so, but are checking emails earlier than that. I start at 8 and enjoy the two hours of peace so I can actually get stuff done. Starting at 10:30 meant I wasn’t finishing until late to bill even a normal amount of time.
Yes, but it depends on practice group and firm. I’m a litigator in NY and start my day around 8am because my childcare only goes until 6:30am. I can usually get a solid two hours of work done uninterrupted before any meetings/anyone needs me.
I also start around 8-9am, and I’m consistently one of the earliest in the office / sending morning emails. I definitely know a fair number of people who start their day in earnest at 10-11am (although they’ll respond to small emails or such in the morning before coming in).
I would say closer to 9:30-10.
One reason: some people may have had a morning hearing so will be coming in only then.
Another: Some people start working in the morning and then travel to the office late to avoid rush hour.
My own: I would sometimes start work early but come in late so I could use the toilet at home(until I got to a workplace with good facilities).
This. I’m a big fan of working from home in the morning and then coming in around lunchtime to finish out the day. A lot of my colleagues do this too. It’s a good way to avoid morning rush hour and also to get a good break in the middle of the day.

I want to clarify that I don’t think my colleagues aren’t checking email. They just don’t seem to be starting the day (at their office and not just chatting over coffee), though, until 10:30.
This is not to judge. I’m wondering if I should adjust, though.
For me things don’t get cooking until probably 10-1030
Um, no.
