Following because I feel the same way. In corporate and it definitely feels like there’s not enough work to go around despite partners swearing there is and if we just look hard enough/be persistent we will find it. My impression is the lack of work is making the relationships with those mids and juniors who would naturally be our mentors/connections in the firm tense. Often I am on deals with people a few years above me and it feels like they are trying to scoop up all the work, including tasks I could be doing. I get it because they need the hours too but it makes things feel awkward and makes me feel unwelcome on or not a real part of the team.
A1, for me (and I assume many other mids/seniors) whether I give a junior work has much more to do with the quality of the junior associate than it does with my own hours.
There might be some things I’d offload to any junior if I was slammed that I decide to do myself if I have time. But that’s typically because I have time AND the junior on the team has been performing poorly or consistently been unresponsive/unavailable. If the junior had been solid (doesn’t even need to be excellent), they get the work if they want it.
Also, sometimes I end up having a junior do something I wouldn’t normally because they are proactive and ask me if they can take the first cut.
Being a lawyer in general is an isolating job for most. It’s not collaborative from a task based orientation. You meet, then you spend the majority of time reading and writing. It’s hard, but not impossible, to make it something more than that.
