I have billed 4+ hours today helping a partner prepare a 10 slide PowerPoint for a board meeting tomorrow. Let’s say half of the time was fixing spacing and formatting. I really don’t care as I am billing all of it, but am I wrong in thinking this is unjustifiably too common and a waste of time?

Huge waste of time. Not your problem though

Your job is to accurately bill your time. It’s the partner’s job to write off time to keep the client happy.

This is the bizarre part of big law, because of the billable hour, there seems to be no incentive to manage better and be more efficient. Always seemed a bit backwards to me.

Yeah I’m at probably Am250 after being at a 20-30 attorney regional firm for 3.5 years.

I received revisions to a stock purchase agreement from a partner and he left a comment in the margin in one section stating that “this section says (a)?” It was supposed to say Section x.xx instead of (a). When I sent it to him last week it said Section x.xx.

I quickly realized that he had somehow screwed up the section levels in 3 Articles of the agreement which I cursed at my laptop the whole time while correcting. There were very few revisions so I should have been able to accept changes and send directly to the client. Instead I billed an extra .6 correcting the formatting.

Nothing is worse than when a partner tells you they want the format changed, you change it, and they they for whatever reason, reconsider and want the old format.

Do you have document services or legal assistants you can throw this stuff to? I’ve always been told to not spend time actually doing this but to review their work instead.

I don't think that's legal work that can be billed for as an attorney, personally. Not your business if that Partner is screwing his corporate client though.

I’m running one of the deals, semi running the other one and not doing much leading on the other one. Note: I was supposed to not be running any of these. Would greatly appreciate input from others.

I recently left the gov’t for private practice with a M&A group. How does everyone bill when you are thinking about how to structure it and what docs need to get drafted? I’m learning that billing is an art so any canned language would be great!
