Like are we just needlessly comparing ourselves because we need validation and power?
Definitely maybe
Deloitte is the best since it's harder to get into than Harvard
Short answer: the people outside consulting who are professionally relevant to consultants in some way (clients, B school admissions, folks looking to hire consultants for strategy roles etc.) absolutely care about the difference because it’s an effective heuristic to judge quality of output for a team or individual without first investing the time or money to experience that output for themselves. Everyone else (most of the world) couldn’t care less

Most of my relatives can’t believe consulting is a thing, let alone give two squirts about the differences between firms they’ve never heard of.
Yep. Just assume I’m rich.
Depends on the circles I guess. I personally was pretty clueless about consulting tiers before I joined the industry. Otoh, when I got my BCG offer my extended circle (mostly Ivy League and T25 undergrad unlike me) seemed to know what it meant, except for the techies who are in their own world of tech stuff and psychedelics. Also seems to have made a difference in dating, but hard to say since a lot of other things have changed over the years too. People in bougie industries like finance, corporate law, fashion, blue chip art etc know what MBB is
🤣🤣💀
You had me at “techies who are in their own world of tech stuff and psychedelics”
They are the same
Nobody outside of our world has heard of any of us. I applied to google and they’d never heard of Deloitte. Occasionally someone is like “oh yeah I saw that name on that building. Are you guys a bank or something?” I had never even heard of EY until I came to Fishbowl.
World don’t care frankly. They think we are all leechers
They don’t care. I’m at Accenture and a question I get from former co-workers in industry is “So how do you like working at Deloitte?” (To them it’s all just consulting).
Somewhat related - every time I (re)explain my job to my grandparents, telling them I work at Arthur Anderson is what works best.
