I use "Friday Five Minute Free Write"as a weekly warm up activity. Give them a general topic, and they can write ANYTHING about it. Good, bad, agree, disagree, nice or ugly. They just have to write for 5 minutes straight. It's hard at first but by October they are "truckin'" I put a timer up. I give points (usually 20) for: did you write at least 10 sentences? Did you answer the question/talk about the prompt? Grammar is usually the last thing I look for in these. Wordy Wednesdays are for vocabulary, I do grammar on Thursdays. I haven't figured out a catchy phrase yet. EdHelper.com has great activities for grade level punctuation and grammar work. If you can post a poster like this "Let's eat Grandma! Let's eat, Grandma! Use punctuation don't be a psycho" it's cute.
Check out The Writing Revolution. Their approach is quick, but integrates into any subject - and I mean it can go into PE and Band just as easily as Math or Science.
I’m not an elementary teacher but in school they told us that the students should be writing more than we can physically assess, so just having them do it for practice can build their confidence and stamina, but you can still let them share if they want or give participation points too. I’ve also always been firmly in the camp of troubleshooting grammar with native speakers instead of teaching it explicitly since it saves time and helps engagement. Mini lessons on whatever problems they’re having, plus noredink.com has a ton of awesome grammar modules.
I use Quill.org. The kids like it and there are tons of free activities.
