Early on, I would feel guilty about taking a day off, but now I realize that when I push myself too hard, I’m not doing anyone any favors - myself or my students. A well-rested teacher is way better than one running on empty

No.
As the fairy tale goes, “Once upon a time,….” Then I realized how many days I had accumulated and starting using them. And then came COVID when my job was cut, causing me to move to a different district and leave almost 60 days behind in the table. Now I use every personal day every year and am starting to schedule the days I will be “sick.” I’m planning to take about 1 every two weeks for the remainder of the year.
No, not a bit
Do you feel bad about using your pay check or health insurance?
Days off are part of your compensation, don't let anyone make you feel bad about it.
Absolutely 💯 correct!!! We should be able to call out and say, "I'm feeling so good today, and I don't want to waste it at work today ".
It's what I'm doing today. The stress of winning from 6 a.m. to 6 pm. is weighing on me. I was sick but didn't fully recover because I needed to be in school to make sure teachers were covered and reports were done, testing, etc. Well, now I'm home dealing with high blood pressure and recovering. Take the time your health is more important!
Never ever. Ever. I have 1000 hours of sick time. Best believe I'm taking a day a week!
I do, yes. Even though I know it is part of my compensation, and those days are there for me to use, there's always a little bit of guilt about taking off a day. I felt that way when I was not a teacher, though!
This is why I rarely take days off. Making sub plans and knowing that my students and paras will struggle is motivation enough to just go in and suck it up. I do plan relaxing stuff for myself during holidays and vacation weeks, and I practice Yoga daily to help me stay sane.
It is not about being “important”. I know that we are all replaceable. It about understanding that as humans we are all connected and everything has a consequence or a result. Working together, being part of a team means that each person has a role. If I need a day off, I do my best to plan ahead and make sure that the parts of my job that I am responsible for are taken care of because I don’t ever want to be the reason for anyone else’s bad day. The amount of work that is involved in that preparation is often not worth the additional time and effort. It is easier to just show up and do my job. Does that make sense?
