🤔 Do you feel comfortable saying no or setting boundaries at work, or does that feel like something you can't or shouldn't do?

I pushed back and was told associates should never say "no." Just quit that firm.

You can push back on unreasonable time frames. Or you can ask for confirmation of which competing interest you should prioritize.

Certain tasks may be appropriate to say “no” to, based on your job duties. Ain’t no one ordering me to go pick them up lunch.

like

Depends on tenure. I usually only start to feel comfortable saying no once I’ve built a solid reputation as a reliable, hardworking person. I find people take my “no” more seriously when they know from my general street cred that I’m not just trying to shirk responsibility. But I think outside any extreme circumstances, I’d look crazy “setting boundaries” one month into a new job, for example.

With ego-defensive managers, even reasonable flags of constraint are met with judgment or surveillance. This is a red flag and a sign that something has to change, whether you lateral or go above them to discuss structural changes.

The consumer electronics division in my company needs creative management/direction for a team of packaging designers, well probably more than that really. But there design team is not very organized or reliable because of their control freak owner, who is very indecisive, and probably micro-managing.

Anyone up for the task?

Any advice on how to deal with a partner/boss who is shifting all responsibility to me with zero guidance, no mentoring, and an unwillingness to discuss the issues? (Small firm, only associate under this partner and have been working at the firm for 2 years). There are an increasing number of passive aggressive comments from the partner who expects to be completely hands off once the case lands on my desk. Wants me to figure it all out despite cases being from different areas of law.

Hi new here. Idk what my value is and if I’m getting paid an amount that reflects my hard work. I am a paralegal for a small law firm (family and immigration) w only 1 attorney. I have about 20 files or more in my rotation at a time. I work on various types of cases at once. Some are simple, others are extensive. I feel like it’s very unstructured and one of the managers micromanages. It’s like every man for himself. Take home pay is $50k. I am working on my bachelors deg. Do I get paid enough?

I’ve practiced litigation in DC for about 5+ years at a larger plaintiffs’ firm, and am considering a switch to a defense firm. Is there any insight to how many billable hours this would require, and how much time that would actually be? For reference, the firm has a 1900 billable hour requirement and the partner said I would have “no problem” fulfilling that based on the work they have.

Transactional associate. Lateraled 6 months ago and one of the biggest pain points has been my new firm’s inclination to “hop on a call”, which of course requires every single stakeholder to join. The end result being every call has 25 people on it and nothing actually gets done because no one wants to ask a question that could come off as silly. It’s destroying my ability to get anything done during the day. It’s a complete performance and it drives me nuts.

Layoffs. Most big firms say they're sitting on a conservative pile of cash - which I believe is true - but work will obviously not return to pre-COVID levels in the short term, probably not even in the medium term. Are Biglaw layoffs coming?

I'm a long time prosecutor getting into the ID game and billable hours. Are there any resources out there that can help me get more effective/efficient without spending months/years learning the hard way? Some days I'm at the office 10 hours, took virtually no breaks and yet only bill 7. 🤬
