The core 5 certs basically gets your foot in the door for anything that isn't highly specialized... That's Admin, App Builder, Sales Cloud, Advanced Admin, Service Cloud.
It helps and is expected. You should at least have admin and the consultant certification for the cloud you are working with (Sales, Service, Community, etc). You'll learn something and better understand what the capabilities are.
Always good to have but not mandatory for joining. However, once you get inside, you are expected to do a bunch in a specific timeframe, as applicable to your role.
Short answer: Yes. If you’re going to be affiliated to a specific product, then get certified in that and at the very least, go through Trailhead. Admin is always a value add but don’t expect Salesforce to think they will honor your knowledge based on a similar product line.
