Depends on the agency. If you’re at a design-led shop, you should make more. Design depts in most agencies are lean and the average designer is more talented, technically.
But most traditional ad agency design depts are smaller because they use you less. You need a good eye, but unless you’re setting a look for a brand, you’re largely laying assets out. It’s work, but busywork. Unless you’re pitching, you’re not creating things from scratch 24/7, just iterating on a brand with an established style guide. An AD COULD do your job in a pinch.
But those ADs and CWs need a much deeper understanding of branding and strategy and client relationships and are expected to travel more and present and pitch and pivot and defend and wrangle and are hired because they fought through hundreds of qualified candidates. You all are good at visual craft. ADs/CWs need to be great artists, strategists, client schmoozers, presenters, and diplomats. We’re also much more expendable because our billings expand and contract a lot more.
So it really comes down to the market setting the salary. I don’t mean to diminish what you do though. I worked at one very design-led shop and the designers would lead our work, work longer hours, stress more and generally could outclass any one of us. You SHOULD be more indispensable, you often get relegated to deck design, banners and end cards. But we get paid for the BS, instability, and the grinding it takes to get in the door and stay there.
In a classic agency there’s a big gap. Art and copy earn more than design by some way at the most senior end.
I think they should be paid in the same ballpark, and I think everyone on our team does.
Both art directors and copywriters get paid more than designers. I don’t know why because ya’ll work hard and under even tighter timelines.
