I think stuff like that is just weird. I can see using AI tools to do some task, but getting into considering it a companion just seems creepy to me. There have been some weird news stories about young people being badly advised by AI "companions," and I can see that being a source of a lot of controversy (and litigation) in the next few years.
I have an oppositional view but hear me out. Most of us have great or sufficient social interactions with people, have friends and family to talk about silly things or get advice from for more serious things, and other such seemingly small things. A certain population of people don't have it that way, and find it extremely hard to find and have as little as one real friend. Not that AI can EVER be a replacement of that kind but what's wrong in thinking about it from that perspective? This could be a huger service for such people than we can imagine for them. Yes, this comment is truly inspired by the movie "her' before it turned heartbreaking.
