To answer your question directly, no they should not be mandatory. But also If you want to advance your career faster, go to these. Put in time with the people ahead of you. It’s the best way to get to know the partners/Senior people. People want to help people they like and these are good events to get to know people.
I think it’s a good idea to take part in those types of activities, but I also think they should be at 4 PM or over lunch.
I think if you RSVP yes and then don’t show up that’s worse than just not attending.. I couldn’t believe how many people did that at the last event we had
I know they shouldn’t have them during busy season … WTF?
If you want to grow, go! You get to observe and learn from leaders of your firm. That’s incentive enough, plus free dinner.
