Not all but some creatives are like babies. You gotta out smart them and keep their fragile ego from breaking. It's like when Indiana Jones has to grab the holy grail. It has to be done carefully or a huge rock of creative emotions will rain down on you. the bottom line is as an account manager it's not your role to get them to listen. You communicate, you follow up, you tell your boss and keep it moving. Iv learned in this business some people gotta feel it when they minimize your contributions. Do what you gotta do and keep it moving. Be nice and honest once in a while stand up for them and have everything written. Don't let the anxiety get to you, in the end all this work doesn't really matter😉. We are not saving lives.
Creative teams can sometimes get so fucking annoying and they’re used to people babying them and thinking it’s okay because they’re the creatives behind the work.
It’s such bullshit honestly. Especially when much more senior account people just brush it off because they hold more weight and they don’t get the brunt of it and continue to hand hold them.
I hope you do speak up to your manager at least. At the end of the day, we as account people are literally just doing our jobs. It doesn’t give them the excuse to disrespect us.
If it feels right, schedule a best practices brainstorm. Hear what they think about the current ways and how they feel teamwork could be improved. Then, you’ll know your next step.
If you speak up and there IS retaliation because of it, I believe that is a big no-no at our company.
I would do what is best for YOUR mental health. You and only you have to live with the decision you make. Toxic environments have to be ended.
I love your emoji. Risk reward, you decide.
Yes. You can lose your job.
You could, but I would think that’s unlikely. If they did let you go over attempting to address an issue, I would count your blessings and move on.
The key to solving this will be communication. You should try to address it with the creative first before taking it to their manager. This immediately takes the “telling the boss” aspect off the table. You can always save that if the behavior continues.
Conversations like this are always uncomfortable but it’s best to be direct. I’ve started convos like this before, “Hey, this is really uncomfortable for me to talk about but I’ve really been feeling a lot of animosity from the team and I want to figure out if there was something specific I’ve done or not done that could be causing this. “
By stating that it’s uncomfortable for you and directing the conversation to something you may have done, it can help to diffuse an immediate defensive response. Let them know your goal is to find a better way to communicate and work together.
If they take issue with that, it’s time to speak with leadership.
Anxiety sucks. Being direct and getting it out there will be a huge relief. If it doesn’t go the way you want it to, you’re not at fault. You’re putting in effort to improve the team dynamic.
