Does anyone else struggle with taking detailed notes during meetings and have tips for improving? One of the partners I work for demands that the most junior associate take detailed notes and circulate them after every call, but I have a hard time comprehending the call if I am taking notes because I’m focused on typing quickly. And my notes can be spotty when I get behind typing or get distracted.

What works for me is transcribing the call by typing while on mute, then going back to digest the info and summarize it before circulating.

I use notability on my iPad. As I write notes with the apple pencil, it records the audio. When you want to go back, you can touch any area of notes and the recording will play back what was being said as you wrote whatever text you tapped on.

I wish I could record more things but it’s usually always privileged info and should def not be recorded

I made a template on Word for deposition notes. It’s just a table with a key at the top for my shorthand, a to do list, and then different rows for different topics. It works as a visual aid for me to focus on what’s really important when taking notes and then makes it easier to organize later

I take notes by hand as a concentration tool, but still end up missing things. If I’m the one expected to remember the details, I’ll do a thorough write-up afterwards and save it to the system (or circulate to the team, depending on expectations) for reference later.

I’m actually freaking out because I just got assigned to take notes in a meeting tomorrow and then circulate them. idk why partners make us do it. it’s boring secretarial work.

anyway, it’s litigation strategy in a new jurisdiction that I’m unfamiliar with. So I have zero idea who half the people, cases, and judges are that they mention, and they go so fast.

I prefer handwriting too, but I guess I have to switch over to typing because I cannot keep up.

sorry, this is more of a rant than anything. just needed to vent.

Everyone works on their own thing and stays muted during work blocks, but videos stay on. It reminds me of studying in the library vs at home

One of my frustrations with myself (writing it out here so I can work on it) is that I will print out something that I need, such as a traffic collision report. I will read it without actually reading it. This results in spending time without actually retaining info. Does this happen to anyone else? I’ve found that I can actually focus when I truly force myself, but often this happens after I’ve discovered an error or an important piece of information that I should have noticed earlier.
