Appetite loss is a common side effect for any of the stimulants. I lost ten pounds my first week on Adderall. That got better for me in time, but it's still not unusual for me to forget to eat every now and then. Usually when I'm really swamped, then the stress plus appetite suppression just take over. Scheduled meals can help.
As for food aversions, for me that's not related to the meds per se, but that I've gotten so hungry everything sounds terrible like it will make me sick. Toast, ginger ale, and ramen (or at least chicken broth) are my go tos when that happens. Then once I have some calories in, the sick feeling goes away enough to actually eat something. Overnight oats take more planning but are good for this too.
This makes sense. The overnight oats is actually a great idea! I don’t have motivation to cook when i’m not hungry but having something ready def helps. Thank you!
Strattera was a game changer for me. I was way over-prescribed on Adderall, dosage-wise, because it wasn't helping my impulse control at all. Was amped and anxious all the time. I'm now on Strattera w/ 10mg Adderall XR and that combo works great. I find the Strattera really helps with the non-focus aspects of my ADHD like impulse control and remembering tasks. Plus it's nice that it's not a controlled substance so I can get 90 days of it cheap on Mark Cuban's site.
The appetite thing will likely subside on its own. Mine did (though some days I wish it hadn't) in about the time you've been on it. If it's still bothering you after a week or two, talk to your psych; they may recommend lowering the dosage or going off of it for a week or so to see if your appetite returns. But def let them do the recommending. Don't go on/off stuff in your own.
Strattera is non-stimulant, but nausea is a common side effect. I too have issues with the food aversions and finally connected it to the mild nausea. I now take mine with a small bit of juice in the morning, instead of water. It helped out a lot.
Also, stick to it and keep the dosage conversation open with your doctor. I too thought it wasn’t working until my dosage was too high. Finding that point and then pulling it back a little helped me find the sweet spot. Try keeping an eye out for smaller changes. For me it wasn’t focus that I noticed at first. My first sign that it was working was my OCD symptoms calmed down. It’s a bit of the “thigh bone’s connected to the hip bone” situation for me.
Sending you positive thoughts!
