Who here has successfully requested accommodations at work? How did it go? What kind of place did you work, and do you think that affected your ability to seek accommodations?

Unfortunately, I sought accommodations at work when I was undergoing a medical condition and needed multiple foot surgeries and they refused to meet my accommodations. The company I worked for was a children's inpatient mental treatment hospital . I then sought the advice of an attorney and he thought I had a solid case but at that point, I would have only won a year's worth of salary. He suggested that I go out on short-term disability, which then ended up in long-term disability, which then ultimately ended up in firing. I could have potentially won but I didn't have the money at the time to hire the lawyer so I was SOL. Good luck and hope you fair better than I did!

I’m sorry this happened to you. Wish you pursued a wrongful termination case

What sort of specific accommodations are you looking for? For me, if I've needed them in the past due to a medical condition they've been met gracefully. Also, I have had coworkers who have asked for improved accessibility and equipment, and those have generally been met.

I work in a law school clinic. I recently got an office in the back with less foot traffic and noise-canceling headphones. I check email at specific times of the day instead of being always vulnerable to distraction. My team knows to send me a chat if they need a response right away.

I recently heard about a lawyer whose firm purchased him software that blacks out text on your screen other than what you are reading. He’s in a private firm.

I was hit by a car while biking in 2017 and broke both of my legs. I was only 6 or so months into my new role and my team was beyond accommodating. At the time WFH was not nearly as common as it is post-pandemic but in communicating my needs I was able to WFH every day with the support of leadership. I suppose it really comes down to your organization.

I’m one of the only attorneys in my Texas firm that had electricity, internet, and water this week. I was warm and comfortable but still could not get any work done because things going on in the outside world are distracting. I just want to know, I’m not the only one that struggled this week to do any work, right?

After 4 years I want to leave law because of my adhd! I have been to 4 different firms and at each place I feel like I have been “found out”. At every place at least one attorney catches me about my attention to detail. I am so down on myself now. I can’t bring myself to care about small details that I know don’t actually matter. Sitting at a desk all day in word documents is the ultimate form of torture to me. My strengths are talking to people. I am super outgoing. Looking for a new career

What are your strategies for completing work efficiently? How do you figure out how long projects should take? A consistent piece of feedback on my yearly reviews has been that I over-bill & spend too much time on assignments. It’s something I actively work on, but I still have no concrete sense of how long I should spend on basic tasks (e.g., drafting a motion to dismiss). My firm is right to expect that I manage my time better as a mid-level associate. WFH has made my time management worse.

Does anyone work in an area with lots of exterior environmental noise (traffic, concerts, trains, etc.) and have tips for not becoming overwhelmed and/or distracted by it? I’m finding that environmental noise has increased near my office now that tourism has picked back up in my city, and I’m struggling to block it out.
