Make sure the soil is super well draining! Remember, their native home is the desert, where it’s dry.
Look for soil that’s well-draining. Mix in some perlite, as well. I personally use Bonsai Jack’s Gritty Mix for my succulents.
Cacti and other succulents like soil that drains really well. The cactus potting mix is good, you can even mix in perlite (super cheap) to keep the soil more airy and help it drain faster. Let it dry out completely between waterings - these are desert plants so they can withstand some drought. As some else else said, as much direct sunlight as possible.

Also, a terra cotta pot would be great, too! It’s a porous pot, so the soil can dry out from the sides as well as the top and bottom. Keeps the overall plant dry and not overwatered.
I've personally found that some of those cactus soil blends you can find at the store work well. Something that has a decent nutrition supply and drains well.
This of course may vary depending on the specific plant you have, but cacti in general tend to appreciate a drought-deluge cycle, with big soil-soaking waters every few weeks and not a drop in between. So soil or conditions that keep them consistently damp likely won't keep them happy.
For any of my 🌵 or succulents I use miracle grow cactus/succulent soil and then mix in some pearlite. I water them in when I plant them and then don’t look at them for like a month. I water maybe once a month (every 6 weeks in the winter), and add some fertilizer during the summer months.
I highly recommend buying a quality plant light or plant light bulb to fit into an existing fixture. You should also set it on the timer.
Cactuses are generally the most highlight plants, so lighting is more critical than any other type. If it’s only getting a limited light right now, though, take a few weeks to ease it into a new lighting routine. Gradually increase the light time until it’s getting at least eight hours. I would even push for more, especially if it’s not sitting in front of a south facing window.
I have a couple bookshelves from ikea, they have glass shelves and are not enclosed. I have 2ft long plant lights from Amazon that I used zip ties to attach underneath shelves, and an Alexa plug to turn on/off at sunrise/sunset. If pink light isn’t your fav, there are other options that aren’t colored light.
There is special soil available for purchase for cactus. Plant your cactus in that, full sun, ignore it!
I actually purchased it
Great stuff. Pls send us pics and keep us updated!!
This is what it looks like.. is there anything I should do?
I feel like the weather in Utah is drier than the east coast.
