Does anyone have experience with RTA (ready to assemble) cabinets? Any pros/cons. I am adding a small kitchenette (7 cabinets) in a basement. These are less expensive, but they will require my time to assemble them. Are there any other challenges or drawbacks doing it on my own?

I redid my kitchen this summer and the cabinets I ordered came to my house RTA, then the cabinet company had a professional crew assemble them. It took a 3 man crew almost 5 hours to assemble them, and then my actual contractor had to install and align all of the doors / drawers. There’s a skill to assembling cabinets and making everything look consistent / plumb / level. Personally, if you’ve never assembled cabinets before, I wouldn’t want to do it myself in my own home. If the final product looks off, you’ll notice it every day you’re in that kitchen. That level of attention to detail and knowledge is worth having someone with experience put it all together and install it. I’d expect it would take someone about 15 to 20 minutes per cabinet, at $40 to $50 per hour to install. If the cabinets are still cheaper than pre-assembled with that estimate, then maybe you go for it.

It was all included. I paid for assembled cabinets. They just didn’t tell me that the assembly happened in my driveway until a few days before they arrived. It wasn’t a huge problem, I just didn’t expect it.

I also remodeled my kitchen this summer with RTA cabinets. The instructions weren’t amazing but it still only took about two days to assemble 15 cabinets. The quality probably varies but a family member recently use the same company for their cabinets so I felt confident.

The hardest part is probably leveling the cabinets and securing them to each other. You’ll probably want to watch some tutorials.

@spm @CII Thank you for sharing your experiences.

I was giving myself an hour per cabinet (worst case scenario) so that I am able to knock these out over a weekend but will gladly take anything less, and if under 4 hours, even better.

I agree with you both on finishing details, i.e., leveling the cabinets, especially the cabinet doors. My worst fear drilling misaligned holes for door hinges or if the doors ended up not being straight or leveled. The salesperson told me that the line of cabinet that I am considering does not come with pre-drilled holes for the hinges.

The price difference for seven cabinets is coming out to be $1100 between ready-to-install vs. RTA. I was thinking of saving the difference and using it towards a nice countertop.

What would you do after having gone through the experience?

The small kitchen area is in my own home as I am getting my basement finished. It is kind of tucked away on the one end of basement. It will not be visible in most cases. It is mainly to use for large family gatherings, etc.

Researching the job mkt & pay for nursing: It is so easy to set up a first interview esp. as a nurse. Set up a zoom meeting, in the zoom meeting ask abt job details and ask for the salary range. They will give it to you, and in my case it was the same range for both of the companies. (Hospice oncall nurse here👋). Then you fit in somewhere on that continuum based on education & experience—that where the negotiation comes in—they will make a case to place you as low as possible on the scale.

I'm early in my career, managed to save $30K to invest, and want to get my hands dirty with a rental property without too much risk (e.g. no HML/flipping). It sounds like that's a tall order in the NY/CT area given the prices, not to mention whether I'd be able to get a mortgage on anything below $100K, but I figure I'll give it a shot anyway. Any advice on what you might do in my position? Am I being crazy with this idea?

For any of you real estate investors, what tools or sources did you learn from when getting started. Can’t find a mentor currently so want to find some highly recommended books or videos. If focused on the tri-state area (NY, NJ, Long Island mainly) that would be even better. My hope is to buy and rent out a apartment while also owning a house and house hacking that by renting part of it out. Trying to understand all the steps, traps, and how to find if it’s a good investment.
