Does anyone use an online discussion board set-up for homework assignments? Most of my students are college-bound seniors and I think this would be a great skill to get them familiar with, since it's so common it is in college courses.

I used discussion boards quite a bit last year during virtual classes due to COVID. However, this year the kids are struggling so much with communicating effectively with others that I’ve been using pair/small group discussion to foster this.

Our district uses Canvas. I have started with posts of 50-100 words. Now students are writing 250 words easily. I told them 250 is usually the minimum for college discussion posts and now they don't complain as much!

My 9th grader does them about three times per week. I think they are a great idea!

I use Google Classroom and they submit there. It’s great!

The skills & academic stamina of students in adv. classes are the lowest my colleagues and I have ever seen across ALL subjects. Students also seem not to care about the quality of their work, goal setting, & improvement like they did pre-C-19. Being back in person for a year has not erased the learning losses; in fact, this group is worse off than last year’s classes. Do you see this trend in your advanced programs? I wonder if it’s a district curriculum & philosophy issue or more widespread.

I need some strategies! When I introduce a text I use choral reading and whisper reading to guarantee students actually read the text. After an initial read, we go back and annotate to understand the text better. However, I feel like I do all the work. The class doesn’t seem to be thinking about the text. There is a lot of yawning. It’s like they are just waiting to write down what I tell them to. How do I get kids to think about what they are reading? How do I get them to do the work?
