Does anyone use models of coaching aside from an expert model? (One where there’s an expert/coach observing the teacher and providing feedback)?

We’re just starting to work with a model that introduces self-coaching (where teachers videotape themselves then re-watch and reflect on their own before meeting with coach) and peer coaching (where teachers observe and with training from the coach learn how to provide feedback to own another). Just wondering if anyone has had success with these and would be willing to share what worked/didn’t work for getting it going.

Yes! I haven’t read the full book, but this is actually the way I received coaching while I was in my Master’s program, and we were assigned reading excerpts from it. That’s a good reminder. I’ll try to look it up and revisit. We’ve started using Practice Based Coaching, so we have a set of criteria and teachers receive expert, peer, or self-coaching depending on where they fall in the rubric. I’m excited to have more freedom and variety with how I coach. :)

I’ve done a lot of peer and mentor coaching as well. While I’m not an official IC, I’m dept head, mentor and grade team lead. I would often meet with teachers and just workshopped stuff

What is one tool you wish you would’ve had your first year teaching?

Any advice for a new instructional coach? I just accepted the job and am trying to get a head start over the summer!

Our teachers will be returning to our school building as usual (about 10 days before school starts) whether school is virtual or face to face, so our school is wanting to plan a traditional welcome back for them. In the past, the celebration was usually a whole school group event at on off-campus locale. Unfortunately, with social distancing, etc., it makes it quite difficult to do the big gathering. Just wondering what other schools may be planning to welcome back their teachers. Suggestions??
