In-house lawyers vary but on net they aren’t overly impressed with the vault ranking of your firm. Some are but candidly it is more common that your “prestigious” firm name will have concern about whether you are a fit to the different culture, style and priorities of an in-house legal department.
I've honestly had better luck hiring from small and boutique firms.
Barely matters. The only roles I've found that care about biglaw are M&A/securities roles, and they basically care more that you have the background/years of experience (generally > 5 years) than firm name. YMMV obviously.
I think it depends on the role. For instance for restructuring/ bankruptcy lawyers, “prestige” is very different than overall prestige. Similarly for PE lawyers, litigation lawyers, etc. Ultimately, they’re making determinations in a very short amount of time and your firms breadth of work in that specific domain is ONE out of several data points they’re looking at to determine whether to move ahead with you.
My F500 typically won’t consider anyone who doesn’t have Big Law or elite boutique experience absent unusual circumstances (e.g., an AUSA or an SME with specific government agency experience).
Further to your question, A1, we do have some foreign national lawyers based in the Southern Hemisphere who do that kind of work. But I assume OP is asking about hiring for US/Canadian jobs.
I don’t care about firm name but I do care about the type of experience. It can be difficult to get exposure to the same type of complex matters at smaller firms. However there are boutique firms with niche specialties that definitely get that type of work.
