Does Latham have career associates? Are they paid on scale?

Your pay stops increasing at some point if you don’t make counsel, and that naturally nudges people out the door. But if you’re useful and generally have good reviews, then in theory you could stay on one year at a time. This would be a terrible situation to be in though. You would want to make counsel if your plan is to have that kind of longevity as a non-partner.

You’re the one who’s not reading. I didn’t disagree that comp stays flat and none of my comments (nor OP’s post) was about whether comp stays flat. You keep saying people can stay assocs indefinitely when that’s wrong and empirically untrue given that not a single ultra-senior associate exists.

They're kept shackled in the dungeons and have long since forgotten the scale. They are paid with Doordash credits and are offered the opportunity to participate in overpriced firm medical insurance plans.

I’ve seen some very senior associates but those always seemed to be people getting strung along with a carrot of potential promotion. Career Counsels seem to be a thing.

I just don’t know why you would want to do that. You can be a counsel somewhere with no BD.

Networking: I’m trying to build a network with MBB employees but I’m searching for roles in another country where I’ve got minimal school connections. Should I start by building a network in my home country and ask them if they can put me in touch with someone in my target location? Or just go straight to people in my intended location with cold requests/emails? Thoughts and views welcome!

Why do firms fire people with low but still profitable hours? I am in my first full year on track for pretty low hours (~1500) but the actual realized fees (after writedowns) are still double my yearly salary. Is it because firms know they could replace someone like me with an equivalent attorney who would bill more?

Hi All - I’m at a firm that has some infrequent in-house training but not enough to help me develop skills to eventually become a trial lawyer. I know cases rarely make it to trial anymore, but I’d like to develop my skills as much as possible to position myself well when they do. Does anyone have any mock trial programs they’ve participated in outside of their firms that they would recommend?

Name the most ridiculous micro-managing by partners that you experience.

I’ll go first: MP told me that on initial emails, I am always to start with “Hello [name],” but after the initial email, I am not to address her by name again in the same thread. Initial greeting can only be “Hello [name] ” because just first name is too brisk and a “Hi [name]” is too informal. Had a 5 minute, in depth conversation as to why she prefers it this way…
