I’m a third year in corporate and want to switch to tax. Am I too late? How do I ask my firm?

Not unheard of, I did this move in reverse. You may have a year cut but hard to say. If your firm has an associate coordinator use them. But if you have any partners you work with directly that you can trust etc., might be worth discussing with them.

Tax welcomes you with open arms!

Whose arms??

Do you know any of the tax partners and have a good relationship with them? It might be worth having a confidential conversation with a tax partner at your firm with the understanding that this is a delicate matter. If it’s even an option from their end, the partner will tell you whether it’s a safe move within the firm.

This is the way. Tax groups are weird about who they want to take, so you need to be sure they want you in the first instance.

Your firm will probably veto it unless they are actively looking for tax associates

A1 serious q, why is tax a nutty choice? i was told tax has better wlb than most big law transactional practice groups…

If you are serious about tax just go do an LLM at NYU full-time. 3rd year switch would be hard to justify (even with a year cut) given the rates and the learning curve associated with tax practice. Obv dependent on the firm and if your firm has a highly commoditized tax practice that deal with very specific tax issues (like MBS, CLOs, for instance), the switch may be easier.

As someone who holds a GU tax LLM the above comment is a bit nutty. Do not go spend a year of not getting paid while also shelling out tuition to get another degree. You do not need a tax LLM to be a good tax attorney. I agree that the switch will be difficult and you should be very careful about it if you decide to go that route. But another degree isn’t the answer. I would also add that unless you have done tax work previously and can put the teaching from an LLM into context, it will add little value to your ability to practice aside from generic issue spotting which you can learn as any normal smart attorney. Admittedly a side benefit is the look on paper (which is nice).

My firm’s IT (especially system saving and file locating function) is so bad 😐😞 and they keep doing updates no one asked them for just to mess with the stuff we already got a hang of without doing anything about the issues we actually need fixed. Anyone else in a similar boat? Do you bill the client for the time it takes to fix the IT issue (or IT inefficiency generally, like time taken to find a file in a convoluted system)? Or is that supposed to be our non-billable time?

I’m currently a third year in my small firm’s life sciences team. I’m not really stimulated by the work and although they say they have a lot of work, they’re not good at managing workload. I haven’t had much work on my plate even after asking many times for more than six months. I’m ready to move to a larger law firm. However, I am concerned how I’ll manage the workload as a mom to a toddler. The good thing about my firm is that they’re flexible with hours. Anyone have experience balancing?
