Does your company promote a work-till-you-drop culture? At mine, it feels like the unspoken expectation. I see coworkers sending emails at midnight, and when I actually log off at a reasonable hour, I feel guilty—like I’m not pulling my weight. Last quarter, I worked 60+ hour weeks to meet a major client deadline, and instead of acknowledging the burnout, leadership praised the “commitment.” I know I need to set better boundaries, but I worry about looking like I’m not a team player. How do you push back without it hurting your reputation? Have you successfully drawn a line without consequences?

Pretty much. They don't say that of course but my manager was mad at me just this past Friday because I couldn't stay late and had plans. They say they want us to have work life balance and take vacations but that is not actually what they mean.

At my old company, pre COVID when I was in office every day, my schedule was set, in contract, from 8 AM - 4 PM. I would always leave at 4 unless we had a meeting scheduled. One of the C-suiters made a comment to me once about not being dedicated because I left every day at 4. Needless to say, I found a new job a few months later!

T3 firm reached out re: direct admit to the partnership with some runway to grow the practice. I am at a firm now where there aren’t bright line metrics to make PPMD, but think I could make it in 2-5 years. This would be a step down in brand, but might be better from a WLB and getting to start at partner. Haven’t had firm comp talks yet but range was well north of 50% increase in cash comp from current (plus LT equity, draws, etc). Anyone take $ over brand? what are some traps to watch for?

How long do you spend on monthly reporting for your clients?
My 3-person team spends about 15+ hours a month each writing monthly reports for our clients (99 small retainer clients). We’ve received feedback that they’re too complicated and the clients just want to know - are we on the right track, what action items are there, and what any next steps are in their strategy.
How do you simplify without losing value?

I work for a small agency and manage our internal marketing acct. We had very few processes in place when I started. I’ve since created, implemented, and trained our dept. on project mgmt for clients and am trying to convince the owner to apply those principles to our internal jobs. They are resistant because they just want the work to be done and don’t “want to keep spending money on internal jobs”. I’m confused because we’re doing the work either way and “spending” in labor/resources.

I got a promotion a year and 3 months ago, and got a pay raise 5 months ago. Could I still ask for a promotion to SAE if I have been supporting a team more as one? Promotions are hard to stab with.

Who else started with small businesses and moved up to medium and large at agencies structured to handle it? I handle 40 clients and some 60 Content managers, ad managers, designers, developers, and a smattering of other positions.

Which was better? I have almost complete autonomy over what happens with small biz, but getting to focus on projects for more than an hour/month sounds nice.

Right so here’s a bit of a dilemma I work to a much higher standard at home and it’s this high standard that means I’m in line for a promotion. I’ve grown so much and I feel really strong in my role I’m also busier than ever. The problem is we’re going back into the office and I don’t want to go in if it’s just going to be senior management in asking me to get them lunches for client meetings or fetch a glass of water and cutlery for meeting rooms. Definitely not ready to go back to that….
