Yeah I make them explain their business case and what’s the value/roi. 99% of the time they do t have the business case and need to come back. I typically have to give them a framework to develop it to my standards then it’s prioritized against the backlog which means if it’s super low value bc in my head I’m saying no then I let them know it’s a year out.
This is the right way, but people tend to get enflamed if they complete the framework and you still say no. People take goals without talking to my team first. Then I get escalated on and told to accommodate them. I have not figured out a solution yet.
My technique is basically to keep asking why. I have to have use cases that are clear and more critical than others. If they can't answer that then they start to realize their request isn't as critical
