Every posting asks for a cover letter, but I’m never sure if they’re actually read or just attached for formality. Be honest — do they matter, or is the résumé doing all the talking?

My theory is that the purpose of the cover letter isn't what it had been traditionally. In the age of paper, the cover letter introduced the resume. I suspect these days recruiters check the resume first, and if they're intrigued they read the cover letter to see how the person expresses themself. The cover letter shouldn't repeat the resume, it should highlight things that may not be obvious from one's resume. It's a chance to show some personality and wit (assuming they exist).

Good information

I dislike cover letters. At best they do nothing and worst they make me look at a candidate in a more negative light because of some pompous and repetitive writing 🤷‍♀️ If I would run the entire process I would not ask for it but I believe our HR usually does.

A cover letter gives you the opportunity to to catch a hiring managers attention. You are expressing your interest about the company, giving them a mini preview of your communication skills and insight to your talents before they even speak with you. I've always found that to be most successful in making it through to the interview selection.

Probably less than coin flip odds they're read in the first place so YMMV

What is a starting salary for a senior consultant that does energy transformation consulting at other consulting companies? I know GH underpays lower than market, but I’m having a hard time gauging how much more. Not enough reports on Glassdoor for my company and city. Please mention YOE and whether you live in a city with a higher COL. Senior consultant is equivalent to the next level up after entry level at GH.
