Every recruiter I talk to keeps trying to steer me toward controller paths or technical accounting roles, like it’s the only route a CPA can take. But I don’t want to keep living in spreadsheets. I want to be closer to the action. I like the idea of working cross-functionally, solving real problems, helping a business grow... I know I’m good at getting stuff done, but I’m worried I’ll get laughed out of the room if I say I’m interested in product management or business operations. Is it delusional to aim for a big pivot like that without going back to school?

You’re not crazy, but you will have to ignore a lot of “play it safe” advice from people who never left.

No it’s pretty easy shifting into business operations. You just need to sell your skills.

How would you sell your skills?

like

Technical accounting is rarely in spreadsheets and is extremely focused on cross-functional work

UPDATE (RE: SoCal Assistant Controller Interview)

So after two weeks of waiting (and giving up on the idea of getting the job really), the recruiter got back to me.

They said due to month-end and quarter-end close they were busy and couldn’t get back to me as quickly for a “good update”.

The recruiter said the CFO enjoyed our call, she, the CFO, will call me next week directly to “discuss some final things”.

Not sure if Im hired or not, but are there any questions about the job, comp (cont.)
