Everyone says if you want to advance your career, jump agencies. Is there a path to success at staying with an agency for longer? I’m at an indie that’s finding a lot of success, the work is generally decent and occasionally quite good (I haven’t gotten any juicy opportunities yet though). I also notice many people have been here for 5+ years. My partner and I very much want to stick together as long as we can since it feels very kismet.

If an agency is doing well, ride it. It doesn’t last forever. Just make sure you’re growing with the agency.

If you don’t get a promotion by year 2, start looking elsewhere.

In general or just this situation?

If you’re happy there, stay. Down the road, it’ll show future employers that you can park yourself at one place for a while. I’m all for job hopping, but for a good reason. The $$ will come

Also, I see that you’re a junior cw. Stay there for a while. You’ve got a lot to learn and there are contacts to be made.

I stayed at one place for 14 years and the next one for 9 so far. You CAN stay and rise up in an agency. Just stay hungry and passionate and make sure you are always growing and aren’t staying complacent. Growth opportunities can come no matter where you are.

Not necessarily. I know some people at agencies who have been in the same mid level role for 4-5 years now. You can definitely be loyal to a fault.

It works for some people, gotta be very savvy in the politics game.

I think it depends on the shop. I've seen my agency internally promote a lot of creatives

As someone who did a lot of hopping around, I can say that there is a balance to be found. Sure jumping gets you that immediate bump, but I’m now hitting an awkward phase in interviews were people assume I’m a flight risk. Need to sink a solid 3-5 years into my current gig in order to combat that image and be considered for more senior roles.

smart

From what I've experienced, most good agencies don't give junior- to mid-level people any super-juicy projects until you've been there a couple years. So if you're not getting anything good by about the 3rd year, bolt. But if you're doing good work by that point, might want to stay instead of jumping agencies. It's really hard to get into a situation where all the planets line up for you to do killer work, even at good agencies.

Hey y'all, kind of a two part question:
1. I enjoy the people management more than individual contributor stuff. What career paths do you see in our industry for people who are managing support engineering teams?
2. What certifications are valued today? Seems like being a AWS Cloud Practitioner is a good general one, but are there others that stand out?
