Step 1: tell your manager that the amount you have on your plate cannot be executed to quality standards. Either the standards need to lower (ie: the other disciplines pick up some of the responsibility and you’re a “lighter touch”) or you need fewer projects. Create a paper trail of asking for support and outlining the specific tasks you can’t get to and their resulting impact due to being overscoped.
2) start looking for a new job. Truly. You want something in your back pocket asap, and to start building contacts across other companies and recruiters. Where you are now is not a long-term environment.
3) but actually #1, take a few sick days, like right now. Turn off your notifications, go walk in nature, schedule a crisis therapy appointment, get out of the house. Anxiety is illness, your job must deal without you (know the phrase “no one is irreplaceable”? It’s 100% true), and your health must come first. So does your privacy.
So many of us have been there, and regret not leaving sooner. Sending you strength.
I was in your situation a few years ago. There was too much on my plate and I let several companies take advantage of me. By the end of it, I was burned out and I had provoked myself a chronic illness triggered by being exposed to high levels of stress for prolonged periods of time. I wasn't even paid fairly and now I have to live with an illness and its symptoms for the rest of my life. Even nowadays, it feels like my body is addicted to anxiety. On the upside, I climbed the corporate ladder quite quickly and now I'm in a cruisy high paying position.
In hindsight I only wish I would have quit those jobs as soon as I saw it coming. Good luck 🤞🏽
Thank you, this feels very true and your sincerity means a lot to me. Yesterday a lot of work came in, and generally just a lot of things going on all at once. I’ve experienced anxiety through my life and I think I’ve had panic attacks before, but this one felt different, like tight chest pain and feeling like falling out of my body—I barely grounded myself, but if I went one step further, I think I would’ve passed out.
I’ve been told I’m doing a great job and I feel like I’m genuinely doing my best. This job should open doors, I came in with realistic expectations, but a wake up call for sure to start planning an exit sooner. Also a wake up call to do something for my own health. This too shall pass.
I hope you’re doing well now, and best of luck to you as well.
