I’ve found my past in-house jobs through both LinkedIn and recruiters. Don’t just reach out to one recruiter—companies (unlike law firms) often have exclusivity with one or a couple recruiters, so no one recruiter will have every job you might be interested in. But also apply to companies you might be interested in directly

It depends. What practice group?
I went in house to a hedge fund as a 4th year. I focus mostly on normal closed end PE fund and did very small amounts of hedge fund and LP side work. Just applied on LinkedIn. I probably applied to like 80 jobs from 2nd year on. Not sure what you focus on in private funds but there are jobs out there…think it’s competitive and a lot of luck since most of these positions are looking for one person and there’s not much a distinction between a funds associate from clearly v fried frank (unless you’re going to a client).
A lot of the big players in the industry are always hiring. I feel like I always see Blackstone, Goldman, Morgan Stanley, partners group hiring
