Do you do controversy work? I'd be nervous of taking on stuff like this

I’m not sure I exactly have a concentration besides tax controversy. It’s really all about solving the issue the client comes to you with. I’ve done tax court litigation, state court litigation, international voluntary disclosures, circ 230 compliant memos, dissolutions, tax exempt reinstatements, etc.

Is malpractice insurance included in this for people who are in-house and don’t have insurance anymore?

You can ask the aba staff but I believe you are covered by the ABA insurance. It should not be an ongoing representation, and should just be the one day for a couple hours.

Additional Posts in Tax Law

Hi Tax Friends. Seeking some advice. I will give more context in the comments, but big picture I am a non-tax litigator interested in switching to tax. The question is: (1) pursue LLM; (2) take tax job now; (3) just treat tax as a hobby?

Transitioning from com. lit into tax controversy?

I have a tax LLM and started my career out of law school doing M&A tax at a big4. After 9 months, I got out of big4 transactional hell and into whatever litigation I could find. I now practice commercial lit but would welcome the opportunity to eventually transition into tax controversy (which I wasn’t able to do before). Does my commercial litigation “break” hurt my prospect? How long can I stay in com lit without hurting my chances even more?

Junior biglaw tax associate here. Considering an internal transfer vs lateral to NYC from a smaller market. Any firms in the v20 I should avoid/look into? I have pretty reasonable hours at my current firm and trying to avoid going to a sweatshop. Interested in international tax and hoping to avoid m&a. Firms I’m considering: Latham, Gibson, Sidley, Goodwin, Milbank. Thank you all!

For anyone who practices tax lit in the US Tax Court, what’s your experience with the independent office of appeals? Interested to hear other people’s experience.

I'm currently completing a tax LLM (as a foreign trained lawyer) but considering pursuing a JD. I'd like to do it part-time while working. Which firm/service line gives me the best chance to do both? Also, is part-time Big4 work even a thing?

How difficult is it to lateral to other areas of tax without prior experience in the area? (Ex: Income tax planning to estate planning, corporate tax to exec comp, or estate planning to controversy work, etc.) Assuming you have an LLM or a couple years of experience in your first tax area.
