For all the former consultants, what skills have you learned that helped you transition to PM and what skills did you have to unlearn?

Ex Corp strategy into PM at mid sized tech, not strictly consulting, but two key themes were: extreme ownership - you are responsible for holistic success, not PROJECTS with a clear hand off, and a learning mindset is key and will serve you well.

like

Definitely learning the client POV and that includes keeping up with industry literature/news/trends/competition.

Had to unlearn the myopic client ONLY perspective and temper with engineering POV.

like

This is a very important perspective. The way we approach an issue completely changes in PM vs consulting, and there's a real need to balance internal needs with external goals that doesn't really come through in consulting

Leave the hierarchy behind! Let’s say you are hired as a senior PM, and in your former consulting life you were used to folks in tenure below you sending you outputs in intervals for feedback before it reached leadership eyes… I would say take a step back from that. Let Junior Pms take true ownership , try not to be nit picky over things like exclamation points or ppt formatting , and really learn to empower your team

So, I've realised there's a problem with developers, a lot of them are coders, not engineers. And another issue, is that, companies don't really care about their progression as far as I'm aware, so what did you guys do in your own time to transition from being a coder to an engineer?

Advice on applying to PM jobs with 1yr APM experience?

I like to apply for Product Manager roles at Amazon since I like the role. I have done front office CRM (SAP) implementations for Fortune50 clients through Accenture.
It is more of sitting with users to understand their process and map it to CRM suite and build additional features to map their specific processes.
I have also worked on sales, BD and functional spec creation for new features.
Can I count these as Product Management experience while applying for Amazon or other Faangmula?
