Totally been there. One thing that helped me was shifting from “how” I did the work (e.g. FAR, SOWs, compliance) to why it mattered. Think outcomes: Did you streamline workflows? Save time or budget? Mitigate risk? Commercial folks want to know how you made things better, not just how you followed the rules.
Focus on your skills, not your tasks. What do you know how to do as a result of the work you did? What did you accomplish, and can you quantify those accomplishments? Stay far, far away from acronyms, abbreviations, and gov-only terms. Instead of “procurement,” say “purchasing.” Instead of “flag officers,” say “senior staff” or “executives.” Etc.
ChatGPT helps a lot for the first draft! I also go onto LinkedIn and look at profiles of people who made the transition from government to commercial to reference their bullet points.
Explain what you did in plain English, no acronyms and no govt only terms. Focus on the outcome. Be realistic with the scope.
