The process to get your I-140 is taking 2 years now, with the PERM process alone taking 13 months due do Department of Labor backlogs. After that, your firm will need to start the process of filing for your green card (if your priority date is current and you’re not from a backlogged country like India or China). I would budget 2.5 years for the whole thing and you won’t be able to switch jobs during this period because the application will be forfeited if you do.
With all the backlogs, the wait time is taking longer (PERM used to take 30 days at one point!) so try asking your firm to start sooner rather than later.
My firm has a policy of waiting for the person to be employed for a year before starting the process.
A1, precisely.

Start the process as early as possible and try to get it approved before you join the new firm if your new firm will be initiating the process. Currently in process at my second firm and the whole GC process is taking much longer post covid.
Got it. Did you/your recruiter (assuming you worked with one) negotiate the green card timeline at all? I understand some firms do sponsor from Day 1 under certain circumstances.

At what year do firms sponsor? I've heard after your first H1B expires but not sure if many firms do this anymore.
