Damn, bro. You can’t just be asking people about their structures like that
Just did, my guy.
The work is significantly less sexy consulting side because it’s expected to actually improve the client’s bottom line — not just win Lions. You need to actually understand your client’s business. And you need to hunt what you eat; network to find good projects vs. just getting plopped onto work.
It depends on the consulting firm and your practice leadership. For better or for worse, the firm that I was at incentivized leaders to sell — not develop their people. So, I always had something to work on, sure, but it didn’t necessarily feel like anyone had my interests or career development in mind. It was far more about capacity utilization.
This said, many consulting firms just care about productivity (% hours you can bill to a client.) So, if you’re interested in trying new things, this is great. As long as you’re staffed, no one gives a hoot what you’re doing at a junior/mid level. It’s a great way to explore new interests (tech, strategy, analytics, etc.)
