What does the single parent part have to do with what salary you deserve?
I think he/she is mentioning the single parent status to ask if you don’t have a partner, what is a safe salary to make to take care of 2 children alone. No where in this question did they say that this would be brought up in an interview.
But seriously guys, what should an Asian female with 3 pet poodles and a non-functioning oven make? Not sure if it helps, but I sometimes have blinding migraines.
I think OP means what would be feasible and a comfortable salary for the cost of living in Boston, considering you have a family to support with a single income.
Seriously. Agree with Director 1. S/he is asking about the minimum threshold to manage that family situation... not a factor for negotiation. Sheesh.
You CDs are so weird sometimes 😪
180-220k depending on rent. And ignore all the people on the thread who think context doesn't count as part of diversity
Single parent = single income home like a couple folks mentioned. My apologies the question was confusing. Elissa and Sapient have it
Well Boston has a ton of neighborhoods. Are you sending the kids to private school? Do you mind a commute? A lot of factors. $150k would be ideal to live in a decent neighborhood but not sure about funding the kids’ education
If you don’t mind the commute, you can live a little further out. The issue here is childcare, which is very expensive. Most good nannies won’t take just an afternoon job, they need a real full-time job just like the rest of us and often want to be paid for the whole day even if they’re only watching the kids half of it. There are a lot of universities in Boston, so you might be able to get a college kid but they aren’t the most reliable. You could try a nanny share also, some families like to split the cost but as a newcomer that might be tough. Figure in $35-$45k for a nanny and $4k a month rent. The rent could be a little high but you want to be comfortable, not wondering how you’ll manage every month. $150k is manageable but not easy, aim for $200k and feel secure.
Thank you all!
I appreciate it, VP!
yeah, wtf does your status and kids have to do with it? i’d be shocked if you ever brought that up with me during a salary/rate negotiation.
how much experience do you have, years, clients, and how is your work?
^ Thank you! I don’t mind a commute. The kids will probably stay in public school but would obviously need after-school care so I’m definitely factoring in a nanny for the afternoons.
No prob! Think $150k you could do just fine. Probably $125k would work too but $150k you’d be more comfortable. :)
Depends on your role. The others are right in that your personal situation is only relevant to you. Your role and what you have to offer will decide what salary you can command. I am in a similar boat, not single but single income for a family of 4. I know what I need and what I can ask for. Rewording your question would garner better responses.
@OP ignore the ridiculous children on this thread giving you grief. As a parent, I can totally understand your original intent.
Been about 6 years since I've lived in Boston, but knew folks at the time comfortably living in Cambridge / Somerville area with kids on single income at the range VP1 mentioned-- but, all had a stay at home partner, so you'd have to factor in childcare above that to get to the right range. Good luck!
