For start date, is it reasonable to ask for a month after the conflict gets cleared? Or is it better to start sooner? I don’t want to risk the offer but I do need a bit time.

Would love to just tell em I need 3 months to just vacation and chill. When else do you get that kind of time.

You can always fib and say you are wrapping up a deal/case and need the extra time to complete it before starting.

Update: the firm wouldn’t let me adjust the start date and it’s a bit less than a month from now. I originally proposed a bit more than 1 month from the date I accepted the offer as I knew it would take some time for background check and conflict check (I wouldn’t submit a notice before that’s done)). And then they came back to ask me to start earlier so I said maybe a bit early if the check could be done on xx date. But the check was done a few days later so I proposed my initial start date again, which is about 4.5 weeks from now but they pressed for earlier.
I had similar experience before but that was even shorter.
So I think the most a lot of places can do is about one month.
But I would really like something like 2-3 months for a break. Maybe if you transition to a big company, that can happen. Law firms… usually push for the earliest.

People in tech, or any industry, aren't just taking fmla leave so they can have a vacation before starting a new job. Thats not how fmla works.

The situation has been a little bit special, otherwise I could’ve started a week earlier. I’m communicating with the HR right now and will keep y’all posted.

I’m about to ask for 3 months in between jobs. I’ll of course offer to come next month and let the boss decide if it’s okay.

But if your employer says yes let me know where that is!

Transactional associate. Lateraled 6 months ago and one of the biggest pain points has been my new firm’s inclination to “hop on a call”, which of course requires every single stakeholder to join. The end result being every call has 25 people on it and nothing actually gets done because no one wants to ask a question that could come off as silly. It’s destroying my ability to get anything done during the day. It’s a complete performance and it drives me nuts.
