The likelihood of clients sponsoring clearances have sharply decreased over the past decade or so, but there are opportunities out there as a contractor to get staffed on a project at a client that will sponsor you for a clearance.
You have a higher likelihood of landing on a contract whose client will sponsor to S than to any of the TS/SCI flavors, though once you have a S it is marginally easier to find a client who will sponsor from S to TS+, or TS to TS+.
As an aside, to clarify, it is the client that sponsors clearances, it's not the company.
It’s definitely a stepping stone process unless you’re coming in through the military or a specific government program. I broke in by taking a contractor role that didn’t require clearance at first, then my company sponsored me for one
