Nothing
Genuinely nothing
Earnestly, they are going to make it even more unpleasant for you every day.
I can’t say that my company has done anything that made it better. I would say everything they’ve done has actually made it worse.
I have thoughts, though, on things that COULD be done.
First — recognize that our way of working has changed. Even with most people in most of the time, there are people who are permanently remote due to location, or who are using flex days.
We need more private spaces to get away to take calls to ideate with those folks. As well as small meeting rooms where brainstorming won’t disrupt an entire pod.
Second — all meeting rooms need to be smart. Every meeting should have both a physical location and a call in. The organizer should get there 2 minutes in advance to set the call up. Automated room booking needs to account for this.
Third — create occasions. If you want us all to come in, we shouldn’t just be on calls with each other from the same building. It should be policy that if you don’t have a meeting on your calendar for that day, you don’t have to go in.
When we were first heading back into work there were Town Halls, Happy Hours, Fun Meetings, Volunteer Opportunities and the like to make sure being there was worthwhile.
Now, they have away much of our space and we’re hoteling for desks. My direct report was put up at a pop-op disposable desk in a closet today. Because all the offices taken away from people were reserved for only certain levels and above.
But that shit was empty.
I guess my advice is to make going back to the office as productive and egalitarian as working from home and I’m happy to make the commute.
