Hey let’s chat- and I’m inviting xxx from HR.
usually put on your calendar the day before. Vague topic - catch up, quick meeting etc. They don't usually let you know that HR will be included. Also, they will make sure that you confirm attendance.
It can come from either the manager or HR. I’ve seen both (and sent a few of these out).
‘Let’s chat!’
It’s gotta be a wonderful feeling to be an HR partner knowing that every meeting you put on a person’s calendar strikes crippling fear and one completely sleepless night.
It is the worst. But HR people get laid off too, so I bring that personal experience and understanding to the call. Every single one, I tell myself before the call to handle it the way I would want it to be handled if it was me. It's the worst part of the job, but I also believe (from my own experience of job loss) that it is critical to be an empathetic fellow human and help the person look ahead. I've gone through three job losses over the years due to companies going under or being sold. I found my best, and most lasting after those three, so I can assure everyone they will be fine. No one's future is contingent on any one single job.
If HR is invited to the call, that’s a tell tale sign
If it’s an in-person meeting, a tarp laid out on the floor is usually a bad sign, too.
“Regroup”
"Check In" July 2020 with my "manager" I hadn't had a 1:1 with in 6+ months.
Don’t usually add HR until 5 minutes before it happens. So check the calendar 5 minutes before the meeting. So sneaky.
Same. I was on a call in an IR along with my boss when the Teams meeting for my “Catch Up” meeting set up by my boss the day before was started by an unexpected 3rd person — a phone number I didn’t recognize. My HR’s private number, so it turned out.

Usually cold call you. ECD rang me up. Thought it was regarding a report I made of a manager-turns out it was her and hr doing their retaliation tour
Catch up
Sometimes they’re shorter than normal meetings too, like only 15min.
Often scheduled day of
Typically they have HR join your 1:1 and may move the time up so you don’t speculate. They won’t tell you HR is joining beforehand, though.
In general, from my experience, any generic title “quick touch base”, etc without context is a bit concerning. But don’t overthink it! If it happens at some point just ask the appropriate questions and don’t sign anything immediately-depending on their reasoning there’s always a chance for severance/company paid COBRA you can negotiate.
There wasn’t even a meeting schedule. This was a small agency but the CD came by my desk in the morning and asked if we can chat.
We then walked to an office at the front of the building, instead of his own. I had an uneasy feeling about that, but once I saw HR in there I knew what was coming.
This is what happened to me.
HR pinged me while I was in a meeting at 12:33 asking if I could hop on a call (Publicis)
it can be anything, if you have a PIP then you're in for it, Could be 1:1 or anything.

Vague meeting title to get a hold in the calendar. Then an update a few minutes before to add someone from HR. That's when you know you are Joe Pesci in Goodfellas.
ECD & HR just did a unscheduled phone call in the morning one day for me

Havas?
Mine was “Quick chat”. 💀💀💀
PIP
Mine was a “1:1 Check In” meeting request from my CCO. Sent on Labor Day (hah) for 10 AM the next day. I walked in and saw the HR person. Done and done. While devastating, I’m much better off. Be sure to press them on severance!
