Freelance editors on a day rate - are you double booking when you can? If so how do you manage it exactly? I don’t mean the actual workload but rather how do you handle the possibility of zooms and suped sessions colliding. I feel like on a day rate the expectation is to be available for whatever is thrown at you on any given day.

I have kids so that’s a pretty good excuse on the rare occasion they both want meetings at the same time. I’m usually double booked but it’s never on two high-intensity jobs concurrently - like not broadcast campaigns at the same time where they’d both want to supervise.

It used to be a real problem, but I’m not getting as much ask for live sessions. When I book the job I establish whether they want me live in person, on zoom, or just working unsupe. If live I know I can’t mess around with double book.

The other thing is just to always be very very reliable so clients don’t overreact if I double book.

i’m not sure if there’s a great answer to this other than “try to not let this happen” or “get a producer”. you could try dumb excuses like “i have a dentist appointment”.

like

Agree, I just thought maybe someone had a magic trick I wasn’t already aware of!

Double bookers, book at your rate and pay me half!!!! Seriously, y’all are what’s making it hard for others to eat.

like

Clients hire me and expect me to respond and zoom call and answer questions about editorial choices. Clients I know in person and have built relationships with for years. I am also under nda so I can just share stuff with others. Also then I become a project manager rather than an editor

I think the old saying goes “make hay while the sun shines”. Find a way because the next quarter could be like last November all over again. I have absolutely no guilt about double booking clients I’ve developed for years as long as everything gets done to a high standard and everyone’s happy.

like

I guess my point was other people want to eat to.

I grew up in a nuclear family away from extended relatives who were never really close. Parents were either emotionally unavailable or distant. All I've wanted for myself was a big loving family to call my own.. my parents are unaccepting of my sexuality & my partners family is also quite fucked up so she's isn't super close to them either. Honestly this sucks & it feels like I'll never have a huge supportive family I've wanted & craved for.

I started working as a consultant with EY 8 months ago. Even though I'm content and learning a lot there, I think there are places where I might easily earn more money. I received a job offer last week from Alvarez & Marsal to work as a consultant at the Transaction Advisory Department (financial due diligence team), where I will be paid more fairly (salary & bonus). Should I accept it? Or would leaving EY that early not be wise?

Any tips on how to deal with this…my entire team was let go today (was 5, now just me). We functioned as the Marketing team for 4 brands and primarily focused on product launches and sustaining social media content. My plan moving forward is to only focus on the top revenue driving product launches for now and say “no” to basically everything else. Would love to hear from anyone who has been in a similar situation and can offer some advice.

Are there any books or other resources that mid levels/seniors/counsel/partners on here have found helpful for the project management / managing junior attorney aspects of your job?

I am not finding a lot of stuff written for lawyers specifically , but there is a lot directed at “managers” in business generally that I imagine could be applicable.
