Frustrated with my current job search in the private sector and considering government work. After countless interviews and no offers, I'm starting to look at government roles. However, I've heard mixed reviews about the transition. Can anyone share their experiences? What are the pros and cons of switching to the public sector? Are the benefits and job security worth the potentially slower pace and bureaucratic challenges?

Making the switch to government work can be a great move, especially if you’re looking for stability and good benefits. The job security is unmatched, and the retirement and healthcare perks are solid. That said, the pace is definitely slower, and bureaucracy can be frustrating at times. If you’re okay with a more structured environment and a focus on long-term impact rather than fast-paced results, it might be worth exploring.

Honestly, the public sector isn’t for everyone. The benefits are great, but if you’re used to fast-paced environments or creative problem-solving, the bureaucracy can be a shock. On the flip side, the work can feel more meaningful since you’re directly helping communities. It all depends on your priorities—if stability and a better work-life balance matter more than speed and flexibility, it’s worth considering.

You should spend some time doing research, especially as it's a pretty broad subject. Government jobs can range from local to state to federal, and within each area there are a multiplicity of roles. And, of course, the jobs can range from boring to fascinating. There can be job security, though in the current political environment that may be called into question. But you should find some roles that interest you and apply and see how it goes.

Getting a government job is just as hard as private sector in many agencies. At least a mid level and above role that isn't a terrible job like a call center setting one. I'd suggest looking into how to format your resume to federal style as well to help you get more interviews. Right now many agencies are cost cutting and on hiring freezes if the roles aren't essential so you really need to do your research and figure out which departments and agencies are being funded securely and which ones are not. There's also a work culture and size difference between federal, state, county, and city level jobs so figure out which type of workplace do you want to be in.

This is my first job in a large corporate company, and I’m trying to gauge how long it normally takes to move from entry level to another internal position in the insurance industry. I have been applying internally for a year now and I am wondering if this is normal or if my company is just slow? I am a top performer, with great metrics, and I have some wonderful connections I’ve made who support me. I just can’t seem to move up. How long did it take you to move up? How many tries did it take?
