General strike on Friday, 1/30. I know we are in a client service field and this feels daunting, but consider even small actions: talking to a few coworkers or clients about it (“I hear this is happening!”), postponing non essential meetings.

The most effective nonviolent action we can do is a general strike, particularly for those of us who work in positions of influence for people with money. “But it feels uncomfortable” - I’m realizing, so does not doing anything right now.

Literally the dumbest post of the year.

I totally support the strike, and I'm surprised by the lack of response. The idea of the strike is to force people with power to think about the direction the country is headed and make a change. If their deals cannot get done or if stuff is disrupting business, then they'll make some phone calls. Such change is overdue by 10 years, but better late than never. Also, are there any attys in Minneapolis that have feelings about this? Something tells me they would be receptive to this.

That's what we have elections for, buddy, and as Barack once said, "Elections have consequences."

I am not even remotely “far left.” I’m a corporate lawyer for crissakes. Pretend that only the far left is outraged right now all you want. It’s obviously not true.

LMAO. Imagine getting this pressed over the government enforcing basic immigration law.

I’m not playing hero at all, A18. I’m sitting in my office upholding the status quo. You don’t know me and have no basis for calling me a “narcissist” for comparing the masked thugs marauding on the streets to their historical predecessors. Get bent.

What are you striking for/against? Is this a strike to improve associate working conditions at big firms? I’ve got some good ideas:

1. Firms should stop emailing associates after 10pm;

2. Partners should be respectful to associates and actually train them;

3. Firms should limit associates from working no more than 50-60 hours a week? Need more work? Then hire more associates.

There’s a national economic blackout being organized in support of defunding ICE. Folks are using the time to participate in local protests, call congresspeople etc. If standing up at work feels scary (I know it does to me), you can also start small by participating in buy-nothing tomorrow.

likefunny

Imagine telling a client this lmao. No fan of ICE but I will be working as little as possible as always on Fridays and then going to the bar, where the bartenders also won’t be striking

like

Unfortunately you won’t find much support for a general strike in the Big Law bowl, but agreed that a general strike is much needed when the administration is blatantly lying to its citizens and ignoring the process of law. It would be helpful for our industry to take a stand, but realistically - by the very nature of our work - you’ll find very little sentiment to organize at biglaw firms at least.

Setting aside how hilariously “champagne socialist” this is - serious question: if you want change, why are you protesting the ppl enforcing the laws and not demanding your legislators change the laws?

Even more serious question: why is AOC and other “liberals” not lifting a finger to try to change the immigration laws?

There is an answer, but you won’t like it - the truth is, the conservative and liberal elites are aligned in wanting to have a sub-class of undocumented subhumans that their corporate sponsors do not have to pay fair wages to. That’s why they don’t like ICE, but they love undocumented workers.

So just remember what you are actually fighting for with your lil protest: defending corporate interests in keeping a slave class.

likefunny

I like how you are pretending that comprehensive immigration reform has not passed because of AOC and Ilhan Omar. That’s, ummmm, not what happened.

How does a junior m&a associate strike if there’s a deal closing on Friday, Pls advise

like

Respectfully, that does not accomplish the goals of a general strike at all. The entire point of a general strike is to show the powers that be that the people can shut everything down, not that the people can adjust their schedules to call their congressman.

I am going to try and schedule as many 1/30 meetings as possible

And the banks will burn
Money will be useless
There will be open and unpunished murder in the streets
It will be guns and roving mobs
Land will be useless
Food will become a diminishing return
Nuclear power will be taken over by the many
Explosions will continually shake the earth

Radiated robot men will stalk each other
The rich and the chosen will watch from space platforms
Dante’s Inferno will be made to look like a children’s playground

The sun will not be seen and it will always be night
Trees will die
All vegetation will die
Radiated men will eat the flesh of radiated men
The sea will be poisoned
The lakes and rivers will vanish
Rain will be the new gold

The rotting bodies of men and animals will stink in the dark wind

The last few survivors will be overtaken by new and hideous diseases
And the space platforms will be destroyed by attrition
The petering out of supplies
The natural effect of general decay

And there will be the most beautiful silence never heard

Born out of that.

The sun still hidden there
Awaiting the next chapter.

Imagine me thinking that A19 was serious…obviously was a poem. I just think it’s a hilarious amount of histrionics and responded sarcastically

Do you honestly think the people who self select into the industry where the biggest (only) draws are money and prestige will risk their jobs over something pesky like morals? (And not even accounting for the substantial percentage of big law folks who encourage this administration's behavior, both actively and passively).

Think about all the firms that capitulated to Trump in a major concession to the violation of one of tenets of the rule of law and think about the disappointing lack of response by the associates and partners then.

funny

I dunno, are you participating?

Hello Fam Law attys!

I am in my second year as a attorney, I was a FL paralegal before law school and would eventually like to end up there again. I am in a very small rural area, pretty much only solos, and no FL solos appear to be hiring/expanding at this time.

Do you think experience as a DA or PD would be valuable, with my eye toward a future in FL? Both for the skills gained, and/or as a resume piece?

TY!

Junior Associates - How much student loan debt are you and your peers in these days? A few young partners and counsel at my firm were discussing the student loan moratorium and most of us were convinced we could have paid the majority of our loans off with the bonuses associates got these last two years. But we are all old and when we graduated 150k to 200k was about the max student loan debt people graduated with. So educate me. What is the average student loan debt these days?
