Giving in my notice soon but I’ve never done this before. Can someone help guide me? I’m thinking I have a convo with my boss to let them know I’ll be handing it in. Then follow up with an email. What should the email say and do I need to include HR?

First of all, well done! I’m assuming that you handing your notice in means you have a better offer on the table ☺️

I would do it exactly as you described - get a 1-2-1 meeting in with your manager, and prepare key talking points ahead of time

You don’t need to go into too much detail but think about what they might say and how you would counter.
- would they be likely to offer you a counter-offer? Would you take it? What would need to be true for you to do this? If not, then make sure you very firmly shut this down
- thank them personally for support and opportunities if relevant - if they haven’t been supportive then don’t overthink this
- you don’t need to tell them where you are going

Unsure which country you are in, but think about your notice period. If you are US and it’s 2-weeks do you want to work it? Is it problematic for you if they tell you to stop working immediately? If you are in the UK or elsewhere, your notice period might be as long as 1-3 months - do you want to negotiate an early exit?

Regardless of duration, are there things you want to get completed before you end? Or things you need to handover? Consider what this looks like.

Ultimately though, this isn’t your problem - you don’t owe them anything. I just find it personally useful to think about these things

Have the 1-2-1 with your manager, then send a follow up email summarising that you are leaving and including key points from discussion, and put HR on cc

Then, I usually think about who else I need to tell - who do I like and respect enough for them to want to hear directly from me that I’m leaving. Sometimes your manager and HR might ask you to keep it quiet depending on the broader business context, but personally I’d still tell close friends even if I was asked to keep it quiet more broadly

Congrats, and no need to be nervous. A good (or even just decent) manager will be understanding and happy for you that you’ve found a new role. I recently gave notice. I asked my manager if they had time for a quick zoom chat. Then I simply said “I have some news to share. I’ve decided to leave [company] and so I’ll be giving you my two weeks notice today”. Manager asked if this was a final decision, and I said yes, I’d already accepted another offer, and then we had a very friendly conversation and I shared details about my new opportunity. You don’t have to share anything if you don’t want to. Then they gave me instructions about next steps, who to email, etc.

In the past I’ve also said things like “I’ve been offered a new position at another company and I plan on accepting it, so I’d like to officially give you notice that I’m leaving.” This way you do leave a little opportunity for your current company to counteroffer. In my experience, it’s almost never worth it to take the counteroffer, and they rarely offer one anyway.

For the official resignation letter, simply say that this is official notice you will be resigning from the company and your last day will be [insert date]. That one sentence can be the whole letter, but then I also usually include a couple more sentences saying I’m grateful for my time at the company and I’ve learned a lot, etc.

You can also have ChatGPT write it for you.

Maybe if you have a really toxic company/boss and might be afraid they’d call the new place and talk bad about you? Or maybe you just think it’s none of their business? Not sure, I’ve never indes sharing but I imagine there are instances or personal reasons some people don’t want to.

Hi all,

My boss makes jokes about me being from a different country whenever there is a work meeting or a gathering with coworkers, even though he knows where I am from. This usually occurs when I meet new work-related people or for example if I am in a situation that involves ethnic related subjects.

What is this? This is normal?

Stereotyping?
Racism?

The first time I ignored that, but now it has become a pattern and is bothering me now. I am south-American working in the UK.

Does anyone else feel like people who are generally nice in person and on calls sound mean or stand-offish in emails and text/chat? I get that over-use of friendliness in text can come off as green/immature, but I tend to try and cushion my words with positivity or even exclamation marks/the occasional emoji to show that I don't sound completely unemotional.

Or maybe i'm just an overthinking copywriter who's reading into it too much.

HR denies every complaint made against him and he retaliates to the point of firing people. Very hostile. How do I survive until I find my next gig?
