Going to be brutally honest here. I lateraled about 8-9 months ago, it was a mistake. I’ve been applying aggressively for in house and have gotten some interviews. Should I apply to law firms, as well? The general advice is wait a year but since I’m getting more traction than I expected maybe I should give other law firms a shot?

If you want to go to another firm, yes. Start the process now.

You can also still probably return to your prior firm if you left in good standing. My firm calls them boomerangs, it’s common for associates to think the grass is greener and then realize they made a mistake leaving.

What about your new firm makes it seem like a mistake?

I quit a firm two months in because of culture and was able to get another firm job, I was just honest about why I left

If you start applying now, by the time you start it will have been a full year. Just have some solid talking points around why you want to leave so quickly that are not disparaging about your current firm and don't raise any other red flags about your ability to keep up with the work/handle the ramp up.

Hi everyone,

Not long ago I obtained bachelors and in the interim I have been working at Morgan Stanley. I started thinking about next steps for my education and initial thought was to just go straight to MBA but then I started hearing about people with BS in Business and Masters in different areas not that closely related. Is it even possible to to do for instance masters in law if I only have bs in business or for example masters in something related to renewable energy or so?

I'm entering my final year of law school but am going part time since I work full time as a paralegal. I have been a paralegal for more 10+ years and I want to open my own firm after I pass the bar.

I've worked at a lot of different size firms including a startup with a few attorneys and I was able to help with a lot of the ground work with getting the practice management system in place and still do some of that now at my current firm. Has anyone done this right out of law school? Any advice?

Did your firm’s leadership send a message re the horrific shooting? Before I lateraled we always got emails from leadership, which IMO were very humanizing and appreciated. New firm leadership seems to just avoid — probably to not appear politically involved. Your thoughts on these types of current events and firm acknowledgment?

Was interviewing with a firm and soon after receiving an offer, learned of bad culture/toxic partners in the practice group from a couple of associates who recently lateraled from the firm. I’ve asked for work but no luck. I know they say this is normal for a stub but when should I start getting worried and consider looking for exit options? Fyi, I like my practice group, so I don’t want to change to a different group within my firm, hence would have to lateral, if I have to. Also, other co-1st years are churning in high hours.
