I was in the final stages of an interview with Microsoft two weeks ago, in partner marketing. Then the recruiter told me they were putting the hiring process on hold to assess the need for the role. Well, then we heard about Microsoft layoffs last week. Seems like most were in Xbox and Project Alpha but there’s not a lot of information out there. Should I hold out any hope that I’m going to get this job? Any insights on how much these layoffs have impacted the marketing org and/or new hiring?

The bad news is you’ll be going through the relatively sparse part of the country. The good news is that you are within a reasonable distance of some of the best and most remote distilleries, making them much easier to get to. There are a couple on Arran itself, so those should be easy. All the Islays, Campletown, and Oban are reachable if you are willing to drive and spend the night in Oban and Islay. You’ll want at least 2 days for Islay (3 if you want to hit them all), and one for Oban and Tobermory if you do that. The ferries will suck up a significant amount of time and you’ll want reservations for them because they sell out. On your drive from Edinburgh, skip Glasgow and hit Auchentoshen which is worth the swing around the city. It’s probably the best option easily drivable from Edinburg. Glenkinchie you could probably hit on your way in or out of Edinburgh, time permitting. There are also a handful of tasting rooms and many bars and restaurants with notable collections in Edinburg.

In addition to planning some distillery visits in Edinburgh there’s the Scotch Malt Whisky Society that has a non members bar (queen street) where you’ll try some v interesting drams.
If you spend a night in Edinburgh, find a room near the castle on the Princess street side and use the tram from the airport. The Angels Share Hotel is a great boutique with each room themed after a different celebrity Scot (shirtless kilted Ewan McGregor was a surprise when I opened the door), and they have a fantastic whisky bar. Also easily walkable for all the sights in Edinburgh. The train station right there has rental cars for your trip out of town if you don’t want to head back to the airport.
I also highly recommend Dishoom for a Mumbai-Persian street food dinner or brunch. Fantastic cocktails and the best Indian food I have had outside of India. They have a location in London too if you happen to have a layover with time or on another trip.
