Got an offer from Slalom Consulting at Principal level for $60k more than I’m making now as a GPS Manager. Is the pay bump worth it? All posts on FB about Slalom make me question the move.

Thats 60k brother, you dont leave that kind of money on the table. Even if you do it for a year and leave, your pockets will thank you.
I’d move to Slalom for 60k tbh. I’ve not heard it’s that bad
Take it. It will take you YEARS to get that bump in your current company. Up is the only way to go. Sometimes that means “out”, also.
I once left $100k on the table for a job I thought would have been a better career trajectory. I mean, yes I made it to c-suit but I did regret that day.
Always take the money.
For sure move, 60k is a lot; worst case boomerang back and at least you have more leverage at a higher base
Leverage that offer to see what they will give you to stay. Slalom isn't a great place to be right now, but 60k is 60k. I'd probably take it.
Slalom has a lot of turnover. I would only join for the money as long as I'm going directly into a project (not the bench) or have an internal role fully funded. It's very unstable there right now and they aren't being transparent. I know someone who works there now.
Why is it unstable at Slalom?
Deloitte will always take you back. Leave.
I’d take it in a heart beat. Slalom is in a transition phase where we are reorganizing our capabilities and larger consulting reporting structure. Entering now is a great opportunity to be part of the next generation of leaders. A lot of the fishbowl commentary are from the ones who got laid off or weren’t aligned to the direction our company is going. We used to be a firm that was all about the local model for staffing and it just wasn’t scalable. We’re going more global capability structures with less focus on geography, more about skillset and quality of delivery. Most clients don’t require on site work so it makes sense to transform in this direction. Lots of “but our values! And our friends!” Without consideration for business soundness and the realities of what the direction needed to grow requires.
If you’re coming from Deloitte you’ll get a better work life balance and will be a great addition to the team because we need consultants who are used to being held to standards. Could be a great place to shine!
60 is a big jump - I’d question what band you end up in here with that big a pay discrepancy from where you’re at. P is classified as management so the bands get a lot wider
We’re going through an entire restructure right now, so just be crystal clear with the TA person on what team, what geo, etc.
Take the money while it’s available. GPS industry is going to be wild these next few years so it’s useless to fish around too much. Better to have a more concrete negotiating platform for the next move if you don’t like Slalom
Here’s an alternative perspective.
Partners at Deloitte make about 3x on average vs. MD at Slalom so this depends on whether you’re playing the short game or the long game. Great consultants commonly have money grab options (I did early in the career).
Why would one firm offer such a substantial increase over another? Because they have to offer a premium to incentivize higher caliber talent to jump. And they can, because the compensation trajectory isn’t the same. Not saying don’t do it but take a 360 view vs individual situation, network, and trajectory; or go for the grab.
Unless you are literally on the cusp of being a partner (in the program, have sponsorship, 2-3 years max away at the level below it), you should jump. To the point made above the odds of making it and the increasing backlog in Partner pipelines don’t bode well for the future. Otherwise if you’re staying it’s for the Brand Power alone and that’s not worth an extra $60k in pocket, that’s for sure.
Solid jump. I'd take it. Slalom definitley sucks and I'd go back after 2 years.
Branding hardly matters at that jump
Slalom is not that a great place , especially when you go from D.That being said 60K is a handsome money to seriously think about the switch. Seems it’s worth a try .All the best!
I’m former D and also former GPS. I jumped to slalom a few years ago for a similar raise. I don’t regret it.
But I miss Deloitte and want to go back.
Why can’t you go back?
OP, what is Slalom’s Principal role equivalent to at Deloitte? Manager? And is Slalom’s Director equivalent to Managing Director at Deloitte?
Principal at Slalom is equivalent of Manager at Deloitte.
TBH Slalom has a few too many levels and there is lack of movement currently given their financial outlook putting many promotions on hold.
Principal = Manager
Senior Principal = Early Senior Manager
Director = Later Senior Manager
Senior Director = Early MD
Managing Director = Later MD
General Manger = Partner/Principal
