Be your authentic self. You can't fake being someone you're not. If that doesn't work with the team, I wouldn't worry too much. It will work with another team.
Some office environments aren't for everyone. I've worked in offices where team members are full-on shouting at each other and an hour later they're heading out the door together for a beer; and in places where nobody speaks, everyone just stares at their screens in dead silence.
I went through a phase where I was trying to land a more senior role: the first major role I pitched at, I was told I was too laid back; the next one, I was too aggressive; the next one I wasn't authoritative enough; the next one I was too cold - and I don't think I changed anything between each one. I came to realise it wasn't me, I just wasn't the candidate that particular employer wanted at the time. The right role will come, you just have to be yourself.
If they want a stand-up comic, they should go to a show. Finance isn’t funny. Be serious and let them weed themselves out.
I could understand this kind of feedback if you're someone who doesn't smile much or acknowledge the humanity in the people you're talking to. Small talk is important, despite what people will say. You need to be friendly to make a good impression, even if you dont' need to make jokes.
Keep in mind that they aren't just assessing your skills, that's what a résumé is for, they are looking at your personality. How will you get along with the team, how will you work with others? I don't think it would hurt to show some of the lighter side of who you are.
You are not providing much information about the position and how your performance will be evaluated.
But, businesses are inherently interactive and competitive enterprises where everybody must not just get along, but collaborate, build consensus, persuade internal and external parties, and set groundwork for developing more business that would otherwise either not take place or would be conducted with a different party. .
Your question sounds clueless. Draw on your experience as a student, athlete, community member and employee. You need a serious conversation about the work environment and managing your career.
When you are trying to land a job, profession is key.
You can be professional without being uptight.
