I don't either, this post inspired me to look it up! From the Department of Labor's website: "Observed the first Monday in September, Labor Day is an annual celebration of the social and economic achievements of American workers. The holiday is rooted in the late nineteenth century, when labor activists pushed for a federal holiday to recognize the many contributions workers have made to America’s strength, prosperity, and well-being." Sounds like it was originally recognized by some individual states, but it wasn't until 1894 that it became a national holiday.
Thanks for doing the work and sharing!
A fun fact you drop into conversation at your Labor Day barbecue is that Grover Cleveland signed Labor Day into law to try to get back some credibility with working people. He had previously ordered the Army to violently crush the Pullman Strike, when a strike at the Pullman car company spread to the entire rail network. We take things like weekends and days off for holidays for granted, but there's often a difficult history behind such things.
Grateful some people fought to implement these things. I cant imagine working under such horrendous conditions
I knew it was something about the working class people so to say, but really never did dive into how it came to be or what it really meant. It is one of those holidays where I think most of us just “yay, a day off” and don’t think much into it, at least that is 100% how I am today!
I'm also a part of the "yay, it's a day off" crew🤣
I definitely had to look it up one year because I had no idea what the holiday meant. I love that there are people in here who know that it is though. I was never into history in high school and honestly did not pay any attention in class haha.
I guess it's my turn this year to wonder what it is about!
